Saving a historic treasure

What are we doing to save the building?

The old convent and chapel are a much loved shabby-chic monument to rusty decay. Over the past 50 years many things have changed. Small repairs were done, but not the big ones.  The last major projects were in 1986.  The Board of Directors is new and up for the restoration challenge.

Done: With the help of engineers, contractors and historians, we now have a plan. The list is long, but it is all doable.

Doing: We have started on small but urgent tasks, are doing the preparation work for more evaluations, and getting bids for bigger maintenance projects.

Next: Written plans. City approval. As a National Historic Place, we need to document everything for the Department of Interior.

Obstacle: Money! If we want this to happen, we will need more than local funding. We have teamed up with a proven grant writer and our documentation looks good.

Help: We need a strong level of community support. Funders are looking at small ongoing donors as an indication of community commitment.  If more people give, that shows our value in a way that a historical survey or financial records do not. Your gift helps us now and in the future, and your caring makes the difference.
